Life’s Reflections

Today, we pay tribute to the memory of the one who endeared herself in the heart of her family and many friends, Mrs. Albertha N. Ragin.


Mrs. Albertha “Mama” Ragin, wife of the Late James “Son” Ragin, departed this life on Friday evening, October 16, 2020 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter, South Carolina.


Born February 16, 1930 in Clarendon County, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the Late Murray Nelson and Mary Ann Nelson.


Mrs. Albertha was reared in a Christian home and accepted Jesus Christ at an early age. She was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton, South Carolina. In her words, “I live to serve the Lord”. She served as a church leader, choir member, cook, and member of many ministries in her church.


Mrs. Albertha was a devoted wife, loving mother, sweet grandmother, caring sister, and compassionate friend, who gave much thought through the years for the well-being of others. She was loved and respected for her soft-spoken, welcoming and friendly nature.


Mrs. Albertha served as a pillar of her community. As any outstanding cook, educator, and leader, she touched the lives of many. She had a passion for sheltering and nurturing children, coining the nickname “Mama”.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James W. “Son” Ragin, and daughter, Janet R. Rivers; three sisters, Susan “Cutie” Briggs, Mary Pressley and Rosa Lee McKnight; and two brothers, Isaac Nelson and Murray “Bubby” Nelson.


Mrs. Albertha leaves to cherish her precious memories seven daughters — Minnie R. (Lawrence) Hammett, Robertha R. (Richard) Gibson, both of Sumter, SC, Daisy Ragin of Bronx, NY, Mary Lee McIntosh of Miami, FL, Susan Ragin and Dorothy Ragin, both of Summerton, SC, and Stephanie (Stacey) Brailsford of Lafayette, LA; two adopted daughters— Ashley Ford of Summerton, SC and Betty Ragin of Orangeburg, SC; three sons — James (Debra) Ragin of Sumter, SC, Henry “Lenecia” Ragin and Al (Betsy) Ragin, both of Miami, FL; one adopted son, Tony “TooSweet” Williams of Miami, FL; four sisters— Alice Gibson, Laurena N. Thompson, both of Summerton, SC, Eliza N. Lawyer of Bronx, NY, and Josephine N. Holliday of Sumter, SC; one brother, Elijah “Sonny” (Ellanora) Nelson of Bronx, NY; one adopted brother, Leon McConico of White Plains, NY; three sisters-in-law — Dorothy Domeck of Bronx, NY, Henrietta Caldwell of Baltimore, MD, and Lucrisher (Leroy) Green of Sumter, SC; four brothers-in-law — Moses “Fee” (Marilyn) Ragin, Henry Jeff (Sandra) Ragin, Willie Jerome Ragin, all of Miami, FL, and Johnnie McKnight of Pinewood, SC; 35 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren; two special friends — Isabella Jackson and Rovena Parker; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
